Road Check 2025 will take place on May 13, 14, and 15, with authorities strictly enforcing regulations to ensure the safety of commercial vehicles and their drivers. To avoid violations and keep your fleet compliant, here’s what you need to know:

What to Expect During Road Check?
Inspections Across North America with a Focus on Border States
For 72 hours, inspectors will conduct random inspections of commercial vehicles across North America to verify compliance with safety regulations.
Key Focus Areas for 2025
Each year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) selects priority areas for Road Check. This year, inspectors will pay special attention to:
1. Controlled Substances and Alcohol Compliance
Inspectors will be on the lookout for any possession or use of controlled substances and alcohol by commercial drivers, as federal law strictly prohibits it.
Companies must provide proof of enrollment in a drug and alcohol testing consortium (Random Testing Program).
Inspectors may also review drug test results to verify compliance.
2. FMCSA and Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse Compliance
In the United States, there will be a strong focus on identifying prohibited drivers listed in the FMCSA Clearinghouse, a database containing records of drivers who are not allowed to operate commercial vehicles due to drug or alcohol violations.
If an inspector finds that a prohibited driver is operating under your company, they will be immediately removed from service, and the company may face penalties.
How to Prepare for Road Check 2025?
To pass inspections smoothly, ensure that your drivers have all required documentation. Inspectors will evaluate both the vehicle's condition and the driver’s qualifications.
Driver’s Documentation Checklist
Medical Examiner’s Certificate
Drivers operating vehicles over 10,001 pounds must have a valid medical card.
It must be renewed every two years or more frequently, depending on health conditions.
Expired medical cards are a common violation—make sure all are up to date.
ELD Records and Supporting Documents
Drivers must maintain accurate service status records to comply with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) must be functioning properly, and drivers must be trained to provide records upon request.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Permit
Inspectors will verify expiration dates, endorsements, and restrictions on drivers' licenses.
Having a valid license is essential to avoid penalties.
FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse Query
Inspectors will check the Clearinghouse for any driver violations or prohibited status.
If a driver has a restriction, they will be immediately removed from service, and the company will be held responsible.
Drug & Alcohol Consortium Certificate
Each fleet truck must have proof of enrollment in a drug and alcohol testing program.
Inspectors will request this certificate during the inspection.
Drug Test Results
Ensure that all drivers have a valid and up-to-date drug test.
Companies must conduct pre-employment and annual Clearinghouse queries to ensure compliance.
Company Documentation Checklist
In addition to driver documentation, companies must ensure that all corporate and operational documents are up to date. Inspectors may request:
✔ Commercial Liability Insurance – Ensure the policy is active and coverage limits meet DOT requirements.
✔ FMCSA Operating Authority (MC Number) – Verify that your operating authority is active and in compliance.
✔ Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) – Confirm that your company has paid the required fees to operate legally.
✔ Vehicle Plates & Registration (IRP - International Registration Plan) – Keep truck registrations and tags up to date.
✔ Annual Vehicle Inspection Report – Ensure that annual inspections are completed and approved.
✔ IFTA Permit (International Fuel Tax Agreement) – Verify that fuel tax filings are timely and accurate.
✔ BIT Program (for companies operating in California) – If operating in California, confirm your company is registered in the BIT Program.
Avoid Violations: Steps to Maintain Compliance
To prevent costly violations, follow these steps:
✔ Track medical card expiration dates – Use automated tracking systems to schedule medical exams before they expire.
✔ Ensure ELD functionality – Regularly check that Electronic Logging Devices are working properly.
✔ Verify driver’s license validity – Periodically review all licenses to ensure they are current and have the necessary endorsements.
✔ Maintain an active drug and alcohol consortium – Ensure all drivers are enrolled in the testing program and have valid test results.
✔ Conduct FMCSA Clearinghouse queries – Run pre-employment and annual checks to confirm drivers are not prohibited from operating commercial vehicles.
✔ Keep all company documents updated – Regularly inspect your insurance, permits, and fleet records to avoid issues.
